San Clemente, at the southern tip of Orange County, boasts award-winning schools, new shopping, dining and miles of coastline. Many homes have sweeping views of the Pacific and Catalina Island. San Clemente is famous as a surfer’s dream destination — and for president Richard Nixon’s ‘Western White House’.

San Clemente was founded and developed by Ole Hanson in the 1920s. It was among the first American master planned communities built on totally open land. The city was planned from the start to consist of buildings built in the classic Spanish style — with red tile roofs. In an unprecedented move, Hanson had a clause added to all deeds requiring that all building plans be submitted to an ‘architectural review board’ to ensure that future structures would retain some Spanish-style influence. For many years it was required that all new buildings in the downtown area also have red tile roofs. From its earliest days, San Clemente has been known as the “Spanish Village by the Sea”.

The City of San Clemente offers access to some of the world’s most famous surf locales: San Onofre, Trestles, and Dohney State Beach. The city is also the ‘surfing media capital of the world’. The publishers of Surfing Magazine, Longboard Magazine, and The Surfer’s Journal all call San Clemente home. (Surfer Magazine is next door in San Juan Capistrano.)

In 1968, Richard Nixon purchased part of the H. H. Cotton estate and named his house there La Casa Pacifica. Soon sworn in as the 37th President of the United States, the home became better known as the ‘Western White House’. During his tenure the home played host to many world leaders, including Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev.

Today, the city of San Clemente is a vibrant community of some 68,000 people. The town retains its “Spanish Village by the Sea” look and feel, still offering its residents and visitors unparalleled vistas and surfing opportunities.

San Clemente lies within ZIP Codes 92672, 92673 and 92674.
