Irvine, with its award-winning schools, attractive neighborhoods, new world-class shopping, dining and entertainment venues has become the hub of all of Orange County. The county’s third most populous city offers residents rolling hills, mountains views, streams, lakes, parks and city lights — all within easy reach of Orange County’s world-renowned beaches.

Like many Orange County cities, Irvine had its boundaries determined in large part by historic ranch boundaries. The land that became Irvine was originally parceled by Mexican/Spanish land grant into the three ranches — Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, Rancho San Joaquin and Rancho Lomas de Santiago. In 1878, James Irvine consolidated the three via purchase. When the Santa Fe Railroad arrived a year later, they named their station Irvine. The town that sprang up around it eventually received the name Irvine as well. Over the next 90 years, the land was opened to commercial development. But not without a guiding hand.

The City of Irvine incorporated in 1971 and is an almost completely master-planned community. Slowly carved out over many years from the former Irvine Ranch, the city was designed with many distinct districts (villages), most initially planned to have their own architectural styles. Many of these architectural styles were decided upon decades in advance. For example, the Irvine Spectrum area was planned long ago to have a contemporary/Moroccan design style — and indeed the current up-scale outdoor mall certainly does.

The master plan has produced a vibrant city with homes of every size and style. Lakes, park lands, and open spaces dot the landscape. Near it’s civic core, mid-rise and high-rise residential buildings co-mingle with corporate headquarters and office towers. John Wayne airport serves the entire county with domestic and international flights. (The airport is closed to commercial flights for eight hours every night.) Amtrak and Metrolink trains also call in Irvine.

In addition to award-winning primary and secondary schools, Irvine is home to several colleges and satellite campuses. The University of California, Irvine occupies 1500 acres. Concordia University and Irvine Valley College are also located within the city.

Many large corporations call Irvine home, including Broadcom Corp, Blizzard Entertainment, Gateway, O’Neill, Taco Bell and Western Digital. Toshiba, Samsung and Kia Motors all have their US headquarters in Irvine.

Around the city core, world-class dining, shopping and entertainment venues abound.
