Coto de Caza, situated in the rolling hills east of Rancho Santa Margarita, boasts award-winning schools, horse property, new attractive neighborhoods, fine dining and entertainment experiences. The area offers panoramic views of the Saddleback Mountains and the beach is just minutes away.

This South Orange County community is unincorporated and is a private, guard gated master-planned community developed to contain a balance between residential neighborhoods (single family houses and condos), parks, horse facilities, and schools. The area enjoys abundant parks and open space which complement the many area equestrian properties. Youth sports programs add to the attraction of this vibrant community.

The CZ Master Association services the 4000 residential homes.

Historically, Coto de Caza had its start in 1968, when it was envisioned as a hunting lodge. The lodge still exists as the Lodge at Coto de Caza, but otherwise the plan for the area has changed vastly since the 1960s. Today, the community features upscale tract homes surrounded by luxury custom homes and open space.

Coto has two 18-hole golf courses and two clubhouses — the “old club” and the “new club”. The old club, located in the residential area known as The Village, was once home to tennis guru Vic Braden. The new club is the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club is the center of facilities for the two golf courses and adjacent ten tennis courts. It also has a new Spa & Sports Club that houses a new fitness center with state-of-the-art StarTrac exercise equipment, a multi-service spa, a snack bar with Starbuck’s coffee, and the Michael Chang Tennis Hall of Fame and Member Lounge. Both golf courses are Robert Trent Jones Jr. designs. The North course is said to be the most difficult in Orange County.

A bit of trivia: The name “Coto de Caza” is Spanish for Hunt Reserve.

Another bit of trivia: For the 1984 Summer Olympics, Coto de Caza was host to the riding, shooting, running, and fencing portions of the modern pentathlon.

Final bit or trivia: The Bravo reality TV show The Real Housewives of Orange County is set in Coto de Caza.
